McPherson Bullpup Gunner Schumacher is a returning varsity member of the team this year with a state championship on his mind. “My number one goal this year is to help my team make it to the state championship. We are close every year.” McPherson made it through most of the postseason only falling short to Wamego during sub-state last season.
Schumacher has shown his dedication to the sport especially during the off season training. “During the summer we had 6:15 am workouts. After that we would head back out to the field to get more work in, running routes and building our team commodore.” Last season, Schumacher was most proud of the number of yards he received. With all the extra practice and training over the summer, those numbers are sure to increase.
Before the Bullpups start eyeing the postseason, they will first have to compete against teams like Junction City and Great Bend. Two games Schumacher is most looking forward to. “Some things I’m looking forward to this season are the Junction City and Great Bend games. Junction City is a good team and that will only give us that extra push to keep getting better. Great Bend has also gotten a lot better, and I think it’s gonna be a fun game to be a part of.”
When Schumacher is not on the football field, he is keeping plenty busy with all his other activities. He is part of the football leadership team, NHS, KAYS Club and competes in track and field. Although Schumacher is undecided where to attend college at this point in time, he wants to study criminal justice and become a game warden.
