McPherson’s Gavin Wedel – Track Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

Throwing the Javelin is just one of the many ways Gavin Wedel from McPherson High School competes in athletics. Gavin is no stranger to the podium after just finishing his high school basketball career as State Champ. His goal for track is a top five place podium finish. As a track team, they push each other to compete at their highest level, so collectively they can improve as the season rolls on.

After last’s State finish of eleventh, Wedel knew he wanted more. To prepare himself for this year’s track season, Wedel reached out to a church friend for help. “I met with a buddy of mind from church. Shout out to Casey Hainline. He’s a mentor for me in this particular event. He used to throw javelin in college and every time I work with him, I learn something new.”

During the season last year, Wedel improved his throwing over 30 feet throughout the season. Wedel shared with Vype Magazine, “I am most proud of my improvement because it shows that all the hard work is paying off.” Competition isn’t the only thing Wedel is looking forward to this season. “I am looking forward to making memories with my friends at the meets, and of course, our cookouts while we’re there.”

Wedel finally solidified his plans to play college football at Southwestern College in Winfield. Wedel was undecided until recently where to attend college and whether to play football or throw Javelin. In addition to football, track and field, and basketball at the high school, Wedel is also involved in Kay club, International Club, and FCA.
