Elyria’s Cross Country – Team Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

The boys cross country team at Elyria Christian School has a different perspective for their team expectations than most teams. Coach Devin Rust told VYPE Magazine about the expectations for the season. “My expectation is that each athlete would learn how to compete and honor God through their effort and dedication to cross country.” Being a Christian school, running is not the only focus, but God is a main focus for the team as well.

Coach Rust highlighted Emmitt Neufeldt as a key player for the boy’s side of Elyria’s cross country team. “Emmitt is new to cross country, but continues to learn and compete well. He has been a leader for the boy’s side of the program.” Neufeldt who is an underclassman, has several more years to show leadership and growth for Elyria’s cross country team.

Throughout the season, the coach has challenged his team to set personal goals to reach. These goals could be anywhere from placing in a higher spot at a meet to setting a new personal best time. To achieve these goals, Coach Rust has been pushing his team harder. “We have been pushing the students hard and they have responded well. That has been important to building some early success in cutting
down times and places in meets.”

Two meets Coach Rust told VYPE Magazine his team has already raced at were at Hesston and the Buhler Invitational. Elyria will continue to keep running strong through the regular season. Post-season action for cross country starts in mid-October.
