High school football is just around the corner, and Jayce Schriner of the McPherson Bullpups is ready for competition this fall as the Pups will begin play at their new stadium. Schriner told VVPE he is most looking forward to the games against Wellington, Wamego, and Junction City. “I feel like they’ll all be games to make us better and come down to the wire.”
Schriner was named honorable mention all-state last year as a junior, but has set his eyes on first team all-state this year as a senior for his position as cornerback. Over the last several years, McPherson has been strong in football, and typically going deep into the playoffs. However, McPherson football has yet to finish the season at a state championship game. Schriner said a goal for his team this year is “to be the first team to make it to a state game for McPherson Football.”
Preparing for this fall season, Schriner has been working hard at both his physical and mental game. Endurance for Schriner was not only a physical area of improvement, but also a mental area of improvement. “For my endurance, just pushing past my limits.” In addition to improving his endurance, Schriner enjoyed playing teams with better competition because it made him a better player.
At the High School, Schriner is part of the Leadership Club, which could come in handy this year as the seniors hopefully lead their team to the state championship game. After football season is over, Schriner will continue to play for the Pups in basketball, and in the spring, he will compete in track and field. Plans after high school graduation include going to college and playing football or participating in track and field and majoring in business.
