Q&A with Smoky Valley’s Karson Pihl – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by No Coast Customs

VYPE spoke with Smoky Valley’s Karson Pihl to find out what goals he is running toward this season.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
For the track season, my main goal is to help my 4X400 team break our school record of 3:27,
and hopefully win state in that event. We have a lot of experience in our relays, so I think we
could have some success this year.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
The most fun I’ve had has definitely been the times I’ve gone out to eat with my teammates and
friends at Applebee’s. We always have a good time.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher was my college history teacher last year, Mr. Ferguson. He was very
passionate about what he taught, and you could see it in his lessons. I learned a lot about history
last year.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory was beating Hillsboro to win the league football title my junior
year.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
He is a current teammate, but I have learned a lot from Tytus Reed. He shows up to practice
every day ready to get better, and his determination and fearlessness when he is running is what I
want to have.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
I love being on this track team because of how close we are. Meets and practices are always so
much fun because I can hang out with my friends away from school while we are doing
something we love to do.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do
you take with you?

I would go to a lakeside cabin in Montana for a week with my family to go four-wheeling and
fishing. We do something similar in Colorado most summers, but I think Montana would be a lot
of fun.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would
you spend it on?

I would probably spend it on basketball shoes or stuff for my dorm room next year.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
I am very involved in NHS and my youth group, so we participate in a lot of community service
projects throughout the year. I love helping out at a church camp called Camp Tomah Shinga
with cleaning and repairs during the year.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I am very involved in FCA because my faith is very important to me, and I love to share that
with others. I am also in Viking Mentors, which pairs me up with a kid at the elementary school,
and I love helping out that way and making an impact on their life. I am also in madrigals, our
select choir group and I have been in 4-H since I was a little kid.
VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor
Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
I am in the National Honor Society, and I have been class president for 3 out of the last 4 years.
